The Rite Spot is a quarky bar/restaurant in a bit of a rougher part of San Francisco next door to a motorcycle shop. It has a slow kitchen and it appears from the outside that there might be sawdust and, from time to time a strung out hooker on the floor. But it actually has white table cloths, live jazz, a cozy ambience, abundunt parking, and a loyal local following. The main thing working to keep it from being busier is the owner Jose. (He's from Tawian but his name is Jose) Yep, good ol' Jose sometimes forgets to bring in hamburger buns on a Friday night; Or doesn't get the taps repaired so we run out of all beer. Or, his latest, and greatest screw up: Hiring "muralists" to paint the outside of the building.
These photos of The Rite Spot are the perfect example of why I started to make pies to boost business. Only Jose, with his incredible instincts for business would hire-yes, hire-someone to put gigantic graffiti tags all over their restaurant...including the windows. Nothing says "open for business" like graffiti covering the windows. He might as well have painted signs saying GO AWAY! on the building himself.
Every cloud has a silver lining. I would like to formally thank Tom, a Rite Spot patron to some but to me an angel from heaven, sent down with a razor blade to scrape spray paint off of windows. He spent an hour on Friday on our old rickety ladder cleaning off the windows so at least the building no longer looks completely abandoned.
The next Pie Friday will be on December 11th. Come on down and help keep The Rite Spot alive.
