So for Christmas, despite Britt's objections, I made a cake for us. Because, truthfully, I'm a cake person and Britt's the pie person in this relationship...opposites attract right? So I made myself a Christmas present of the best cake in the world-German Chocolate.
My brother introduced me to the magical wonderment of the hideously ugly, German Chocolate Cake when he won a cake in a cake walk in the Orange County Fair. His joy at winning soon turned to a pre teen gross out. He went to pick out his cake but found that the only one left was some sort of cake that looked like perhaps it had been vomited on. As some of you know, our family was not allowed sugar growing up, so he did what any sugar starved kid would do-- he took it home and, despite a bit of trepidation on how it looked, he ate the whole thing. It became his birthday cake for every year after that.
For those that don't know German Chocolate Cake is made of a light, distinct tasting chocolate and then frosted with a goopy frosting consisting of coconut and pecans. The nuttiness of the frosting is the perfect compliment to the sweet cake.
This pie is an homage to my Christmas cake. I used German Chocolate and then mixed in toasted coconut and pecans into the pudding so there's a bit of delicious nutty texture in there. I won't make it this weekend because I just had a Chocolate Banana Cream Pie but maybe the weekend after.
PS-Sunny skies for this weekend too!
